BAM - Business as Mission Groups

BAM groups are for followers of Jesus who, with the support of their peers and local church leaders, want to become great ambassadors of the Kingdom of God in their daily occupations (2 Cor 5:20).

BAM is not about:

  • passive listening to guest speakers and nothing changes

  • marketplace ministry apart from local church partnership

  • accepting the marginalisation of the church in the marketplace

  • accepting the marginalisation of the marketplace in local churches

  • church theology - but about Kingdom theology.

BAM is about:

  • integrating Kingdom influence in the marketplace through people’s work practices and relationships

  • pastors and business people working together to take the gospel into the marketplace

  • providing teaching on biblical principles that build-up and empower the scattered church in the marketplace

  • using: “Business as Mission” by Mike Baer as a key text

  • the scattered church being doers of the word in their daily occupations

  • accountability and sharing the stories within the group

  • extending Kingdom influencing into the 10 domains (below)

  • mentoring/disciplining in the context of people’s daily occupation

  • prayer and intercession for people at work

  • implementing Biblically based Business Excellence principles as world’s best work practices

  • overseas small business mentoring as part of IMED (International Micro Enterprise Development).

Group Definition

  • agreed regular meeting time and place (prefer monthly)

  • voluntary group administrator

  • shared roster of leadership around the group

  • journal of goals and implementation of principles

  • max 2 pastors in group with the rest marketplace people

  • group size around 14, with 8-12 present at any one meeting

  • voluntary subscription to AMC in support the development of marketplace ministry around the nation ($110 pa).

First Session - Introduction

  • Bible engagement: BAM is do-able (Matt 13:31-33)

  • Definition of marketplace (10 domains) and workplace

  • Definition of Kingdom (Lord's prayer)

  • Identity - who are you in Christ in your marketplace?

  • Mission - what does Jesus want to do through you in your marketplace (John 17:18, Eph 2:10)?

  • where are you on the four steps of Kingdom effectiveness?

  • Vision - where do you want to be?

  • Set BAM goals for 2012 (homework)

  • Journal your journey

  • Share the stories

  • Prayer.

Regular Meeting Agenda (1 hr 15 min)

  • welcome, introductions and purpose (10 mins)

  • Bible engagement with the marketplace (15 mins)

  • Kingdom principles application (15 mins)

  • Share the stories of those present (20 mins)

  • Pray for each other in the marketplace (15 mins).

Pastor Role in BAM Groups is to:

  • develop church and marketplace collaboration in the Gospel

  • train, equip and support the scattered church as marketplace ministers in their daily occupations (Eph 4:11-12)

  • relate to people in their Monday to Friday roles

  • invite workplace testimonies back into Sunday services

  • support church members in their workplace needs

  • develop the role of Business Pastors

  • provide prayer and intercession for marketplace people.
